Agios Pharmaceuticals is the first biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics in the emerging field of cancer metabolism. Built from a strong scientific foundation, Agios has built a robust drug discovery and development platform that integrates metabolomics, genetics, biochemistry and informatics to enable biomarker and target identification.

Agios' platform capabilities interrogate the differential cellular metabolism of disease-relevant proliferative cells relative to normal cells, with potential therapeutic applications in cancer as well as other areas including autoimmune, inflammatory and neurological diseases.

The company's initial focus is cancer, targeting numerous metabolic pathways including:

• Glycolysis or Sugar Metabolism: Agios is developing therapeutics that target a key nutrient of fast proliferating cancer cells, glucose (sugar). These therapeutics will target the breakdown of glucose, depriving the diseased cells of the critical energy needed for proliferation and survival.
  
  
• Fatty Acid Metabolism: Agios is also developing therapeutics that target a key nutrient requirement of fast proliferating cancer cells, fatty acids. These therapeutics will target the synthesis and utilization of fatty acids, reducing the energy source that fuels these cancer cells
  
  
• Autophagy or Self-Metabolism: Agios is developing therapeutics that target a key survival strategy, called autophagy, cancer cells use to consume their own internal nutrient resources when under stress.
